This Is the Best Moment of My Life

A mantra for freezing time in its tracks

It is no secret that children grow up fast. Too fast. Lightning fast. Not a parent is exempt from the bizarre and upsetting sensation of blinking and all of a sudden your newborn is running away from you at parks and picking out her own outfits.

Passing time is beautiful because it deepens relationships. With each day that goes by, I come to know my daughter better and I fall even more in love with her. But I find passing time to be overwhelming now that I have a child because I want all of the time in the world with her.

Because I can’t manipulate time, I have found my own way to do it. When I am with my daughter, I freeze time by reminding myself that this is the best moment of my life. Because any time with her is.

Taking a moment to tell myself this story puts a stop on the clock, if only for a second, and makes me aware of what I am experiencing. It makes me observe everything — her perfect little toes, her hair that is perpetually in her eyes, her squeaky voice.

While rocking her before bed:

This is the best moment of my life.

While holding her because her miniature crocks got stuck on the cobblestones and she tripped:

This is the best moment of my life.

While changing her diaper, cleaning up her vomit, blocking her from the bowls of cat food she continuously knocks over:

This is the best moment of my life.

When she puts her soft, warm hand on my cheek. I close my eyes and then:

This is the best moment of my life.

When I show up at daycare at the end of the day and her face morphs into a big smile and she runs to me:

This is the best moment of my life.

When I put her blanket over her and pat her back, just after turning off her light:

This is the best moment of my life.

We don’t have to be doing anything special for the moment to be the best. Recognizing how beautiful every moment is, even the hard ones, has helped me come to terms with how fast my daughter is growing up.

Since I can’t stop time, I freeze it in my own little way and I say:

This is the best moment of my life.
